Summary:
It starts out with Carl Rollyson, author of the essay, going to Poland. He is there to do a lecturer at the University of Gdansk. While he is there he meets up with his Polish friend and they go to a store, which is called a SAM in Poland, to his surprise that there are no boxes for the eggs and many other things. If he wanted to buy eggs he would have to carry them without a carton. None of the items had brand names. The only brands of food that he talks about are Coke, Pepsi, and Marlboro, which is not food. The Coke and Pepsi and been split in Poland, the North Coke and the South Pepsi. Later when Carl went back to Poland Communism was over in Poland people started opening shops sell brands and other thing that were restricted before. Poland rapidly became like the U.S.A in the economy Carl phrased as the Polish being like cowboys expanding to the west.
Reaction:
I thought that the essay was good but hard to follow. I thought it was good because I got to learn a little bit about Poland. Like how back then you had to have your own bag to carry the eggs that aren't even in a carton. Also how nothing in the store was a brand name all were just cardboard boxes with food in it. It was hard to follow because it went from a story of his travel to a fact about Poland and I had a hard time tracking with it. Overall though I liked the essay.
