Summary:
Nokia's idea lets the phone bend and flex in different ways. When you look at pictures you can bend it out it will zoom in and if you bend it in it will zoom out. The flexing ability of the phone also allows you to scroll through music and even pause your music. You can even use this phone with gloves on also. They even said that you can you the phone "blind," meaning that you can use the phone without having to see it. It could be in your pocket or a purse and you wouldn't even need to take it out of the bag. The Nokia phone is a cool new concept.
Reaction:
When I saw the phone I thought that it was cool. The idea of the phone flexing was very interesting to. That new idea is very cool. The way that you can use it with gloves is a good idea because other multi touch you can't use it with gloves on. This phone is awesome and when I comes out I would love to get one.

The Evolution of the Spacesuit(one page)
Summary:
The spacesuit has changed over the years. The main job of a spacesuit is to protect the wear from the harms of outer space. It protects the wearer from temperatures from 248 degrees Fahrenheit to cold -256 degrees. The suits have done everything from picking up rocks from the moon to fixing the sensitive Hubble telescope. Wired takes a look at the evolution of this unappreciated garment.
Reaction:
I found this to be a good article. It gave a well deserved appreciation for the the clothing that has protected astronauts for years. I thought that this was a good article because it gave pictures of space suits from the past and present. I found all the suit that I looked were very interesting. I thought that it was good of wired to give spacesuit the appreciation they needed.

Freeze-Frame Poland 1979(essay 10 pages)
Summary:
It starts out with Carl Rollyson, author of the essay, going to Poland. He is there to do a lecturer at the University of Gdansk. While he is there he meets up with his Polish friend and they go to a store, which is called a SAM in Poland, to his surprise that there are no boxes for the eggs and many other things. If he wanted to buy eggs he would have to carry them without a carton. None of the items had brand names. The only brands of food that he talks about are Coke, Pepsi, and Marlboro, which is not food. The Coke and Pepsi and been split in Poland, the North Coke and the South Pepsi. Later when Carl went back to Poland Communism was over in Poland people started opening shops sell brands and other thing that were restricted before. Poland rapidly became like the U.S.A in the economy Carl phrased as the Polish being like cowboys expanding to the west.
Reaction:
I thought that the essay was good but hard to follow. I thought it was good because I got to learn a little bit about Poland. Like how back then you had to have your own bag to carry the eggs that aren't even in a carton. Also how nothing in the store was a brand name all were just cardboard boxes with food in it. It was hard to follow because it went from a story of his travel to a fact about Poland and I had a hard time tracking with it. Overall though I liked the essay.

China Moving forward(11 pages)
Summary:
China is moving forward. The article starts out with the Olympics and all the workers who had to go home after it was done. It had talked about all the layoffs and unpaid months Chinese workers had; it was mostly about Foxconn. The article then compared China to Japan and the Soviet Union. Then It talk about how China wants us, the United States to stop borrowing and importing. The only problem is that if we stopped importing from China, China would start to lose money because we are big importers of their things. China is moving forward, the examples given were an division of IBM that created a voice recognition that can convert spoken words to any other language and also a battery company that makes basically all the batteries for Apple ipods. The quote at the end talked about how do we use this momentum that China had for the United states?
Reaction:
I thought this article was good, but hard to follow sometimes. I say that because it went from being about the Olympics to a company named Foxconn laying off 100,000 people worldwide. The part about China tell the United States to stop borrowing and consuming was flawed on China’s part. Even though it would be good for the United States to save and import less it would be bad for China because a large part of income comes from the United States importing basically everything into the United States. I liked this article because it had good content the only problem was that it was not put together that well I thought. Overall though I thought it was pretty good.

Steve Jobs, 1955 – 2011(one page)
Steve Jobs, Co founder of apple died October 5, 2011. He was born in San Francisco on Feb. 24, 1955, and was adopted by Paul and Clara Jobs of Mountain View, California. Jobs only went to college for 6 months he did not see the need in it. Starting his company with Steve Wozniak they created the first user friendly personal computer. He then later was fired from Apple because of a power struggle with John Sculley. After that he continued to create NeXT a computer and computer animations company that he renamed Pixar. Apple buy Pixar Jobs was back apart of the company and back in the helm. With the creations of the iMac, iTunes, and the iPod Apple stocks raised and Jobs became the face of apple. Until 2004 when he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Of which now in 2011 he died of. The Co founder of Apple will be truly missed.
Reaction:
When I heard of the news I thought that Jobs had died was a sad thing. Jobs had created one of the most successful companies in the world. To have him die was a loss. I personal thought that I was sad but not that important to me because he already had resigned from Apple a couple months ago so I don't think that it would affect the company to much since he already quit. In the end though the world and also I will miss him.

The Sahara’s Tuareg(5 pages)
Summary:
Peter Gwin who wrote the article visited the Sahara Desert to meet with the Tuareg rebels. As he walked through the desert the rebel commander tells him to be careful of mines set out by their enemies the Niger Army. For the night they stay close to an abandoned school in the desert. Peter asked people why they were fighting and who the youngest was. They had also talked about the Muammar Qaddafi who supported the Tuareg but also supported the government and the army. When Peter left the rebels the commander told him if the world wants to stop drugs and weapon moving through the desert the world should enlist the Tuareg. But their history of being traitors how could the world trust them.
Reaction:
I thought that this article was interesting; even though I don't like reading about world events. When I was reading the article I thought that it was interesting Qaddafi was supporting the rebels while also siding with the government. If he was supporting both sides that would mean a lot of his money is going to them. I mean he is wasting his money siding with both sides. I also thought what the commander said about the world enlisting the Tuareg was interesting. I think it could be a good idea because they know the Sahara like their own hand. I found this article about the Tuareg rebels informative.

Can Neutrinos Move Faster Than Light?(two pages)
Summary:
If the neutrino can travel faster than the speed of light it will wreck Einstein’s theory of special relativity. The theory states that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light.A team of physicists in Europe stated if the neutrino could move faster than the speed of light then it would shatter Einstein's theory. The results would be so big that there would be skeptics all around the world. The data comes from a 1,300-metric-ton particle detector named OPERA based at Italy’s subterranean Gran Sasso National Laboratory. If this becomes true that neutrinos can move faster than light then it could revolutionize science as we know it.
Reaction:
I think that this will be a big breakthrough in science. Even though Einstein's theory might be disproved, theories are suppose to be changed or proven wrong. I with this discovery if it is true then it could open a new world in science. This could expand what we know about the world. The neutrino moving faster than light could make the world a better place. It is a big breakthrough.

Nike seeks to eliminate hazardous chemicals from products(two pages)
Summary:
Nike has teamed up with Greenpeace to clean up Nike's pollution. With Nike's outsourced jobs the factories that they use are producing harmful waste. That waste is going in to the streams, rivers and lakes all around. Greenpeace has accused Nike and many other companies of polluting the waters in China. Nike together with Greenpeace have started to work together to help solve the pollution problem. They have started to research materials that will not affect the environment that much. Also trying to remove that hazardous waste from their supply chain. Nike along with Greenpeace is working hard for a better future.
Reaction:
I think that it's great that Nike wants to team up with Greenpeace to reduce the pollution. It is amazing that Nike wants to invest in the research to find new ways of making the product. If Nike just wanted money they would never agree to work with Greenpeace. I feel that they care about the environment. And want to work to protect it. Nike and Greenpeace will go far together.

Hemoglobin Action Figure(One page)
Summary:
A man named Casey Steffen loves hemoglobin. “It’s such a wonderful, elegant transporter of oxygen,” says Steffen, who owns a company that produces 3-D animations on scientific topics. He had met by chance Michael Gulen; a prototype action figure director at McFarlane Toys. Pushed by Steffens love for hemoglobin Gulen made a mock up of a hemoglobin. Steffen wanted an accurate take apart hemoglobin that could fit in the palm of a hand. With the uses of 3-D printing it was possible. It got outside attention a pharmaceutical company bought 100 of these. It was also said that it could be the next big children's toy also.
Reaction:
I thought that they hemoglobin toy was cool. I thought that it was interesting that you could take it apart and was not just a paper weight. What I thought was the coolest is that they used a 3-D printer to print out the hemoglobin. I think that it would be a good toy for children to learn about the hemoglobin and get interested in science.

World’s First ‘Blue’ Rose Soon Available in U.S.(one page)
Summary:
The first "blue" rose will be coming to the United States this fall. Named the Applause the rose was created in Japan after 20 years of research by a Japanese company called Suntory. This lab also distills whiskey. Even though it has a purple silver color it is the closest to a "true blue" rose. The blue rose had a mythical quality because until recently humans were never able to produce it. The blue rose has brought the quest for the impossible. Before florists just dyed white roses blue. The Applause, the first "blue," rose was sold for 10 times the original price of a regular rose.
Reaction:
At first I thought that it was cool that they created a blue rose. When I actually saw the picture though I was disappointed it wasn't an actually blue color, but it was a purple lavender color. Also to find out that it is 10 times the cost of a regular rose I would just buy some white roses and dye the color blue. I was disappointed that the color of the rose was not actually blue

Glowing cats shed light on Aids(2 pages)
Summary: Scientists have put a gene that helps cats resist feline version of the HIV virus. They have also put a florescent protein that is also found in jellyfish into the cat to monitor the activity of altered genes. They did this because it would be easier to identify what cells were which. The antiviral gene came from the Rhesus monkey. That gene helps other animals resist the AIDs causing virus. They had inserted this gene in to the eggs of a cat and with sucess they were able to produce that gene and the florescent protein in the cats. They found that HIV version for the cats have been reduced. They believe that this gene will be able to help humans.
Reaction:
I like how the cat is glow in the dark. I think that it is interesting that the scientist were able to find a gene that fights against HIV. This well be a big help to people and their children by being able to reduce or get rid of the HIV virus. But the coolest part of all of this is the glowing cat I thought that the cat was the coolest. Scientist have made a big step into curing the HIV/AIDs. The scientist research will be able to help the human race.

‘Invisibility Cloak’ Makes Tanks Look Like Cows(one page)
Summary:
The British defense company BAE Systems has created "Invisibility Cloak" that can make a tank look like a cow. The patented system, called the Adaptiv, uses matrix of hexagonal “pixels” that can change their temperature very quickly. It allows the tank to be effectively invisible in the infrared spectrum or to make it look like an object even a cow. The current system can allow the tank to hide from heat-seeking missiles, drones and heat sensitive goggles. Since the panels that are used are strong they can be a source of protection for the tank. The panels can also be big or small for different resolutions. This technology is also cost effective. They also hope to make more different kinds of panels in the different electro-magnetic spectrum.
Reaction:
I thought that this technology was very cool. I like the fact that it can be made different sizes for different jobs. Also that it cane make the tank look like any object. I thought that they could make it look like a cow to was funny. I like this technology and how they use it for stealth. I can't wait until I see a T.V. special on it when it is in working order, now that would be cool.

Sprint's suit on AT&T and T-mobile merger (1 page)
Summary:
Sprint is suing against AT&T because of a merger between them and T-mobile. Sprint says that it is anti-competitive by taking T-mobile in one fell swoop. Instead of holding their "peace" Sprint has decided to go against the deal now instead of earlier. AT&T's deal would get rid of one of the four biggest cell phone providers. That Sprint says that would increase the prices hurting the consumers. Sprint also says that the 39 billion dollars to buy T-mobile would not only hurt sprint but also hurt the smaller phone services. But AT&T has argued that it would provide a better service to those in the more rural areas of the United States and they had also pledged to bring back 5,000 call center jobs back to the United States. AT&T says that they will be able to do more with this merger.
Reaction:
I think that sprint might be over thinking this merger. I feel that it would be better for the people who don't have a cell phone service. It also makes sense for the people living in the more rural areas because they are expanding their services. AT&T also said that they would bring back jobs to the United States, which is always a good thing. I really do think that this merger is a good thing.

Time article "How Much for a Room at Earth's First Space Hotel?"
Peckham, Matt "How Much for a Room at Earth's First Space Hotel?" Time August 2011
Summary:
An orbital space hotel for the rich. For a small cost of $984,000 a person will be able to stay 5 nights on a orbiting space hotel. With four rooms that can hold up to seven people. With a great view of the earth and seeing 16 sunsets and sunrises a day. A great vacation for the rich and famous.
Reactions:
For the price of $984,000 I was think I would wait a while until the prices go down. I thought that it was a nice idea but it really is only for the rich and famous. Now the article said that main people that the hotel was attracting was the private companies that want to study space for themselves. or people with insanely deep pockets. After reading this article I was thinking space hotels, it will be a very long time until they are cheap so that everyone can afford it.

Miller, Judith "Biological Weapons and America's Secret War Germs" 2001(10 pages)
In Oregon a cult group called the Rajneeshees had bought a 64,000 acre ranch in Wasco County. The leader who the cultists called Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh bought this land for their agricultural commune where they would celebrate their"enlightened master's" credo of beauty, love, and guiltless sex. Made up of thousands of followers mostly wealth westerners. But this is where a out break of salmonella occured. From one of the cultists favorite eating places at Shakey's Pizza, at the salad bar. It was there were the first cases were recorded.
Reaction:
I thought of the story as interesting. The story of the cult and what they do was interesting but it had nothing to do with the salmonella outbreak. The book had told about the cult and the crimes that they had done but, then jump right in the story of the salmonella food posioning. I didn't think that it had fit too well with how the story was going. As a start out to the story I thought that it was a very interesting beginning.
